Fruit trees

If you have fruit trees now is the time to start planning to care for them this year. Some fruits will be ruined by insect pests if you don't prepare them. Peaches and plums come to mind. All the info is available with your county extension service. Happy New Year.

Rose Rosetta Disease

RRD is a fungus transmitted by tiny insect called a mite. This disease is also called witches broom. Small roses are killed the first year and larger plants may take several years. As soon as RRD is identified remove and destroy the plants to keep from spreading to health bushes. There is no control for the disease but you can control the mites that spread this pest. A local organic publisher says he can save the infected roses but if they are close to neighbor's roses maybe they should be removed anyway.

Removing  Dallis grass from the turf.                                                    We are getting close to the time when you can spot spray glyphosate to kill very hard to kill weeds. This of course is for bermuda lawns only. All other lawns should be dug out. There are other timely acts we need to be aware of. Dormant oil on trees and shrubs (doing mine tomorrow) and applying pre-emergent . Some people may want to wait a little longer but I choose to start a little earlier.

Pre-emergents

Pre-emergents are perhaps the most important product used in weed control. Annual weeds make up the bulk of problem weeds. Broad leaf annuals are much easier to control than grassy weeds.

Pansy Care

Pansy diseases are very difficult to deal with once they appear. The photo is of a very severe case of crown rot. The first thing to do is remove all infected plants. Second is to check the overhead watering and make sure the plants are not staying wet over night and they are having a chance to dry out.
Pansies should be planted in well prepared soil with good drainage. If your planting is of a large number I would suggest having a ph test done.
